YOU’RE NOT FOR EVERYONE

Have you ever walked into a room of fabulous people and felt insignificant?
Don’t lie; you’re human; I know you have!

 

Do you ever think that these people are too fancy for me and would never want to hire me as an advisor? They have it all figured out. They don’t need me. I don’t have anything to offer them…

 

I had a similar experience recently as a consultant, walking into a room of incredible advisors and thinking…I am outclassed by these people. I have nothing to share with them. They don’t need me.

 

When I got home, I sat down to journal and reflect on those feelings, and in doing so, I think I came to a couple of conclusions that might be useful for some of you (and me).

 

At this point in my career as an advisor, I know for certain that I am not for everyone, and I am very secure in that reality. I know the value that I bring to my clients, and I have a clear process to determine alignment.

 

I know for certain that ANY person (fancy or not) is going to get value out of doing a Discovery EXPERIENCE, even if they are not a good fit for my practice. If they are a good fit, I know they will receive incredible value for what they pay me for advice and planning.

 

I know who I am. I know who I serve. I know what value I bring. I feel no shame in admitting when I am NOT the advisor someone is looking for.

 

So, when I walk into a room of fancy people as an advisor, I never feel insecure. I feel completely aligned and willing to share my message should the occasion arise.

 

My recent experience of walking into a room full of esteemed advisors as a consultant and feeling small and insignificant tells me that, in my mind, I think I have to be everything to everyone as an advisor, coach, and consultant.

 

I am not the “scale to a million dollars in a year” coach or the “learn to land whales at the country club” coach. I am not even the “use tech to design your business to run without you” coach.

 

I will help you build an ALIGNED, PROFITABLE, and SCALABLE Advice-Based Financial Planning practice so that you can feel really good about running a smart business in an industry that hasn’t been very good at either of those things.

 

That’s it! Not the most money! Not the fastest! Not the shiniest! Just a smart business that you can feel really good about!

 

So, if you want any of those other things, I’m not your coach! And that‘s OK! More than OK! That is great! You should find that other coach and jump in with two feet! I don’t need to feel any sort of way about not being your coach!

 

I hope that you see that I am telling you this story as an analogy. I’m not for everyone! And neither are you! And it’s not our job to predetermine who needs you.

 

As an advisor and a coach, I have often been surprised by the people who have hired me. People who I would have thought “didn’t need me”, who ended up needing just my insight and process to progress.

 

It’s not our job to prejudge who needs us. It‘s our job to show up, share our message, and allow it to resonate and attract those who need what we do.

 

It’s our job to tuck in our insecurities and be of service. With a clear process that is of value to everyone, we never have to worry about whether we are “enough” or a good fit. Everyone wins.

 

I just want to remind us both, you and me, that we aren’t for everyone, and isn’t that great!?

 

We need to walk into that room of fancy people and hold our heads high. We never know who in that room desperately needs what we have to offer. It’s our job to ensure our insecurities don’t get in the way of making our impact in the world!
